Write a letter to your future self, sealed until the day you choose
A letter to your future self is a small time capsule: what you care about now, what you expect, and what you hope will change. Reading it a year later is surprisingly powerful.
What to write about
- Predictions about your own life: where you’ll live, what job you’ll have, whether that habit will stick.
- A goal, stated plainly: “By next October I’ll have run a half marathon.” A sealed goal is harder to quietly forget.
- What’s on your mind: the worry that won’t go away, the thing you’re excited about. Future you will want to know how big it felt.
- Questions for future you: “Did you ever call her back?” “Was the move worth it?”
- Predictions about the world: prices, technology, sports, elections. Funny to look back on either way.
How long to seal it
One year is the classic choice: long enough to forget the details, short enough that the writer still feels like you. Five or ten years is better for big life questions. Shorter seals, like a month, work well for goals.
Sealing it on Sealed Posts
- Write your letter on the home page. Up to 1,000 characters, so keep it focused.
- Choose Sealed until…, then 1 year, 5 years, or Pick a date.
- Choose Private link if it’s just for you. Only people with the link can ever open it.
- After sealing, tap Remind me or Add to calendar so the opening date doesn’t slip by. Save the link somewhere safe, too.
Unlike an email scheduled to arrive later, a sealed post can’t be edited even by you, and it carries a timestamp anyone can verify. If you predicted something about your future, you’ll be able to prove you wrote it back then.
